Fossil fuels are relatively cheap and readily available. They also provide quite a bit of energy per volume, with substances like coal and petroleum.
It was quite valuable in the late 1800’s as an energy source. In the 1940’s the government funded research to find further uses for fossil fuels, mainly to help in tactics during World War II. This time period spurred the advancement for vehicles and other mechanics reliant upon fossil fuels. We are now dealing with the repercussions from the world-wide dependancy and its pollution.
