They wanted to test viable options for using biofuel in the future, so in 2010, they purchased 20,000 gallons of algae fuel to test it out. It worked well and in 2011, they project to buy 150,000 gallons of algae fuel to run their ships on. By the year 2020, the US Navy hopes to run on at least 50% alternative fuels and they’re also looking into using algae fuel as an alternative jet fuel.
The U.S. navy has three main goals to accomplish by buying algae fuel:
1. increase fuel security
2. increase the usage of renewable fuel
3. reduce reliance on foreign sources for oil
