Why did so many Walrus die in Alaska?

Many of the walrus deaths were apparently the result of stampedes that occurred when abnormally dense crowds of walruses were forced onto land. The walruses were forced onto land because their natural habitat–large ice sheets–has been heavily depleted this past summer as a result of climate change.

With the Arctic sea ice reaching the third lowest level recorded in its history, the walrus had no choice but to come on the shores, and in the ensuing stampede many of them died, especially little ones.
