Why did the SARS epidemic spur the sale of electric scooters in China?

The increase in sales of electric scooters was indirectly linked to SARS once studies showed that sitting in the vicinity of someone with SARS – even riding on the same public transportation – could make a person susceptible to the disease.  Internal combustion engine motorcycles are also banned in many places in China, therefore scooters became a logical choice for many Chinese citizens that did not want to ride public transportation or buy a car.
