San Francisco spent a year and a half counting its parking spaces in 2010, totaling 441,541 spaces. The purpose of counting the spaces was to determine the usage of them, sort of to get supply to meet demand. This article states that it will benefit urban planners in deciding what to do with superfluous parking spaces, if anything needs to be done.
