Why did sales of electric vehicles drop so much in the UK?

Only 55 EVs were registered in the UK in 2009, down from almost 400 the year before.  One possible cause could be the fact that due to the recession, ALL auto sales were down.  Another could be the plug-in vehicles that are on the horizon – the old ‘second mouse gets the cheese’ strategy.  Why buy an EV now when you can wait a year or two and get a much better one for the same price?
