Why did NYC just agree to make data on the city’s water quality available to the general public?

What are the environmental benefits of this?

I don’t think it really carries huge environmental benefits, because the data comes out after quality decline and environmental contamination so I don’t really think it can prevent any accidents. I just think it’s good for people to know what they are drinking and why the quality of their water is how it is.
