Why did most printer companies fail electronic recycling standards?

The computer printer industry garnered the lowest marks in 2010 in a recycling report card created by the Electronics TakeBack Coalition. The reason for this was because printer companies were not doing enough to make sure that they were getting their old printing equipment back. Most printer companies offer mail back recycling programs which allow customers to mail back their old/used printers back to the company for recycling. However, most customers were not mailing their old printers back for recycling because of the size and bulk of the printers. It seems that mailing back printers was too much of a hassle for users.

In addition, these companies performed poorly on criteria such as transparency in recycling policies, vendor requirements, and vendors used.
