“The legislation says the state’s estimated 800 wolves are compromising public safety, destroying herds of big game animals like elk and damaging hunting and agricultural industries.” (url 1)

In the states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana there are around 1700 wolves, which has lead to an increase of wolf attacks on livestock.  The federal government requires only 300 wolves for the species to be considered “recovered”.  This has also become something of a “state’s rights” issue: Montana governor Brian Schweitzer stated that he approves of the action because the state should be able to manage its own wildlife.
