Why did the Mayan calendar only go to 2012?

Despite all the recent hoopla about Armageddon and the Apocalypse and the world ending in 2012, the Mayans’ calendar ends on December 21, 2012, simply because they measured time in cycles of 5,126 years. They called this the “Long Count” calendar; on December 22, they would have simply restarted at year zero. There is no evidence that the Mayans thought the world would end on this date.
