In the mid-1900s, L.A. got rid of its streetcar system and installed the Pacific City Lines bus system instead. Many claim General Motors (GM) was behind this. In the early 1900s, few Americans owned cars. Most utilized the efficient streetcar system. GM, not surprisingly, wanted more people to use cars so they could make a bigger profit. Their strategy was to eliminate the streetcar system and install buses instead. The buses wouldn’t be as nice, which would make people want to buy their own car. Hence, the streetcar system was no longer.
