Why did John Muir call himself an unknown nobody?

It is constantly noted that John Muir had referred to himself as “an unknown nobody from the woods.” You can’t escape reading about his life without the inclusion of the quotation. The reason for his self-labeling is not archived. It can be assumed that he wanted to illustrate a reason for why he was impassioned toward preserving wildlife like Yosemite and have is preserved as a national park.
