Why did humans become so dependent on natural resources?

Humans have always been dependent on natural resources for survival. Without the resources of food and water, humans would not be able to live and thrive. Humans changed their reliance on natural resources to include coal as part of a building block of modern society during the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries.
