Why did the EV1 fail?

I HIGHLY recommend watching the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car.”  It does a fabulous job of explaining what happened with the EV1 and other electric cars in California during the 1990s.

In summary, there was strong political/auto-maker/oil-company opposition that resulted in the zero emissions mandate (which was the reason the electric vehicles were made) being revoked.  GM had only leased the EV1, none were sold.  So when this mandate was revoked, GM took back all of the cars and crushed them.  All of this occurred regardless of the fact that the consumers loved the EV1.
