The EU blocked mackerel from Icelandic fishing boats as part of a dispute over fishing quotas. Iceland decided last year to raise its mackerel fishing quotas, which conflicted with Britain, Ireland, and Norway. This has threated Iceland’s bid to join the EU, yet Iceland has wanted to benefit from the increased number of mackerel brought on by warmer ocean temperatures. Because the EU had significantly lowered the fishing quota of mackerel, they rejected Iceland’s decision to continue overfishing by banning Icelandic fishing boats carrying mackerel.
