Why did dinosaurs have such small brains?

Although dinosaurs were physically well-adapt, they existed during an early evolutionary stage of life. They were simple, instinctual creatures probably with limited awareness. Larger, complex brains are a product of hundreds of millions of years of evolution. Even some animals co-existing with us today which we consider simple by our standards, are probably far more intelligent than dinosaurs were (e.g. dogs, monkeys, cats, bears).
