There are many theories about how the cows died and local vets are assessing samples in a lab at the present time.
Some theories are a virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, (IBR) or bovine virus diarrhea (BVD), even a horrid case of pneumonia that effected them all at once.
To answer your question blatantly, we simply don’t know yet. I would sit tight until lab results come back.
The previous answer cited a source that is a couple months out of date. Scientists have discovered that the cows died from a mycotoxin in mold that was growing on sweet potatoes that made up a part of the animal’s feed. An unlucky group of cows were affected, but the fatalities will not spread to humans, as the spoiled potatoes were only found in the feed, not in any food sold to humans.
