Why did cattle ranching decline in the US?

The cattle industry thrived from 1867 until the early 1880s. The decline of the cattle industry was due to several reasons including farmers begin experimenting with different breeds of cattle which could not live on the open range, less available grass due to an increase in settlers on the plains, the decline for the demand of beef, and severe weather conditions in the years 1886/87.
