Why did castles have moats?

    Moats were primarily for defense–they provided a barrier against attackers, especially those on horseback–but they also were also used for the outflow from the castle toilets and even for spiritual purposes, since the water might have represented a relationship with certain spiritual deities, like the pagan python deity.
