Why did the BMW CEO apologize for his electric vehicle remarks?

Jim O’Donell, BMW North America chairman and CEO, apologized for his remarks about electric vehicles and claims that they wouldn’t work for 90% of the population in order to reaffirm his companies commitment to progressive alternative fuels.

Seems to be a case of speaking in the moment without thinking of the consequences.

A better question is why he would say it in the first place — he also implied that BMW has an electric vehicle mostly just to take advantage of a government credit for it. His stated belief that electric technology is poor doesn’t bode well, but market forces mean that carmakers have to make electric cars regardless of what their CEOs think, which is good.
