Bottom trawling is an extremely dangerous fishing method (equivalent to deforestation). Belize banned bottom trawling due to pressure by UNESCO, who threatened to remove the Belize Barrier Reef System of its World Heritage Site status.

The President and Prime Minister of Belize made a very important and helpful decision to ban bottom trawling. Belize has the largest reef system in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest in the world. The ecosystem of the seafloor is fragile and bottom trawling causes signficant damage to it.
