Well, one of the main reasons desalination is considered bad is because of the negative effects of the plant on the atmosphere. Desalination plants release pollution and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, thus damaging it. It also reduces the amount of oxygen in the air, and increases the density of waste water so that it can’t be disposed of effectively.
There are efforts to develop a more sustainable method of desalination. The vertical farms featured in Dubai use wave energy from sea water to power a filtration system that desalinates the water into fresh water.
Desalination is also extremely expensive and therefore not very cost-effective. Large-scale desalination typically uses extremely large amounts of energy as well as specialized, expensive infrastructure. This makes it very costly compared to the use of fresh water from rivers or groundwater.
