Dairy farming exposes water ways and underground water sources to excessive amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous, the bovine fecal matter also contains pathogens. The trend in dairy farming of having fewer farms with larger amounts of cows in one geographical location increases the volume of the substances in those particular locations, which overwhelms local water-ways.
