Crab grass is hardy because it grows when the turf around it is too short, when it is overwatered, and when it receives a lot of sunlight. Once it is established within the lawn, it can withstand heat, drought, and hard soil. It also spreads like crazy, aggressively taking over your lawn. The best way to get rid of crab grass is to pull it out of the ground by hand, but you can use chemicals to get rid of it, though that takes longer and poisons the rest of your lawn.
