Corn ethanol is controversial because besides the advantages that come along with using this product, there are many disadvantages as well. The whole process takes a huge amount of electricity to produce the ethanol. A lot of these places also get their electricity by burning coal. When you burn coal, a lot of greenhouse gasses get emitted into the air. This makes the whole process of producing a “cleaner” fuel source null. Also, chemicals and fertilizers used to grow the corn are bad for the environment as well. The last disadvantage that I can think of is because corn is so highly subsidized in the US, it would make the national debt even bigger.
It is also criticized because to grow the corn you must use food-quality land. So land that could be used to feed people is used for energy. But alternatives source of ethanol are also currently being researched.
