Check the animation in the link below, which shows how the continents broke into pieces over 100,000,000s of years. Notice that all the land masses are moving away from Africa. And notice that the high mountains in North and South America are on the leading edge as those new continents slowly barge into the tectonic plates in what we now know as the Pacific Ocean.
Big mountain ranges are created by colliding tectonic plates, and that’s exactly what was not happening in Africa. Hence there are literally hundreds of mountains in the world higher than the highest African mountain: Kilimanjaro.
