Why is coal ash harmful?

There are quite a few things that make coal ash harmful.  Heavy metals in the sludge can be toxic to humans, especially if it bleeds into nearby water systems.  These heavy metals can cause cancer, kidney problems, and nervous system diseases.  NPR actually has a great article covering some of the health issues associated with coal ash on their coverage of a spill at a Tennessee coal plant.
