There are several reasons why car-pooling has declined. Cars have become more affordable and more people previously unable to afford a car on their own, like women and Hispanics, have raised their income and ability to afford a car on their own. Companies have also spread out more and the workday has become less predictable making it more difficult for a group of people to use one car. Even though car-pooling has declined, mass transit use has increased in the past 10 years.
