Walnut trees’ roots produce a chemical called juglone that is toxic to other plants growing in the same area as the tree’s roots. This may be some sort of evolutionary protection to ensure walnut trees are the sole harvesters of the water and nutrients in the area. There are however, some plants that can tolerate the chemical, or you can make sure to aerate the soil and restore natural soil bacteria which can destroy the juglone.
