Why can’t all dogs swim?

Swimming is not an innate skill for dogs, although the survival instinct of many dogs allows them to swim without much of a learning curve. Some dogs cannot support their bodies in water, like short, heavy and stocky dogs (bulldogs) or dogs with very short legs (welsh corgies). Even breeds that are typically good swimmers, like golden retrievers, will have exceptions – dogs that just don’t like the water and refuse to swim.

Dogs that are heavy with short legs such as Basset Hounds and English Bulldogs aren’t fit for swimming. It’s not impossible but it’d be more difficult.
