Why can you drink pee to stay alive but not ocean water?

Actually, if you are dehydrated it is bad to drink your own urine because it will dehydrate you further.  If urine is fairly diluted, it’s not too bad, but if you are resorting to drinking it from thirst, chances are it is not diluted so the salt concentration will be high.

As greenjoy pointed out, you can drink urine if it is fairly diluted, because your body can extract more water from it that was not taken out the first time it went through your body.  It is also sterile.

The reason you can’t drink ocean water is because your kidneys can only make urine that is less salty than salt water.  So when the ocean water runs through your kidneys, a large amount of salt is left inside your body, causing you to dehydrate.  Scientists have also discovered that one liter of ocean water could be home to up to 20,000 different types of bacteria, many of which can be harmful to your health.

I don’t know where you heard this, but you will not likely stay alive if you drink only your own pee and not any fresh water. You can’t stay alive at sea without fresh water, not with pee nor with salt water. They are both dehydrating. You would need a water filter to survive drinking either.
