Why aren’t renewable energy resources widely used?

Renewable energy resources aren’t widely used because they are still pretty costly to produce. If there was more production of renewable energy, the costs would likely go down but so many businesses are still reliant on the old methods of energy consumption and aren’t anxious to change. The change over the renewable energy is costly to do at first and most companies are so bound by quarterly and annual profits that a rapid shift toward investment for the future would be costly in the short-term. Until their hand is forced by government (who is under pressure by lobbies from these same companies) or responsible changes are made by consumers, these companies will evolve at a slow pace.
