Why are we so dependent on oil?

Oil fuels a lot of machinery, which can produce a product faster than if it were made by hand. This form of production is cheaper than having to pay for manual labor, so big corporations have become wealthy from this process. Now that corporations have made so much money off of using and selling oil, some of them do not want to see it go. Much like the tobacco companies, oil tycoons have tried to keep the public in the dark about the true problems and costs of oil. Alternative energies have only begun widespread development relatively recently, partially due to lack of information and education about the issue.

The fear of change, mainly from oil companies that wish to keep other sources of fuel energy out of the way to eliminate competition.
