Why are varicose veins more common in women than men?

There is actually only about a ten percent difference in the percentage of women and men who have varicose veins. The most likely reason more women have them is pregnancy which causes varicose veins due to the large supply of blood that enlarges the veins.

One of the major causes of varicose veins is pregnancy.  Not only does a pregnant body produce more blood (making it more likely for large quantities of blood to pool in a vein), increased pressure in one’s abdomen also makes it more likely for someone to develop varicose veins.
