Why are they called icecaps?

The term ice cap is given to ice that originates on land due to the recrystallization of snow and flows outward. These characteristics separate ice caps from glaciers and icebergs. Ice caps are also called ice fields, but likely started being called ‘caps’ because of the way they form a cap of ice over the land they cover.
