Why are they called carcinogens?

The word carcinogen comes from the Greek word karkinos meaning ulcerous sore.  The suffix “-gen” means that which produces.  Combine the two words and you receive “that which produces ulcerous sores”.  Of course the current use of the word is to describe any substance or agent that tends to produce cancer.
