Why are there such big waves on the north shore of Hawaii?

There are several factors that influence the North Shore’s waves, which have been measured as tall as 36-50 feet. The North Shore of Oahu is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on the fair weather side of the storm track and is subject to consistent offshore trade winds. In order for the waves to get so big, winds must reach hurricane force while moving toward the coast. Ideal surf conditions mean a storm that turns away from the coast shortly before reaching it, which keeps the weather fair while bringing in giant swells.
