Why are there so many different types of engine oil?

Companies see that the industry is profitable and thus want to gain market-share. They might alter the formula sightly (if at all), or market it differently in order to gain such a share of the market. Also, individual companies will release multiple types of oil in order to broaden their product line, thus increasing their reach in terms of potential consumers.

There are regular and synthetic types (as well as synthetic blends). Synthetic motor oils break down less quickly, but are more expensive to produce. As far as all the different numbers and letters, those have to do with the hot and cold viscosity of the oil (W is for winter, or cold weather viscosity).
