Why are there so many building codes?

Building codes are put in place in order to best protect people. Buildings can be dangerous or unhealthy if they do not meet certain codes. For example, housing must have screens on windows. This not only keeps out bugs, birds, and bats, but also prevents children from falling out the windows. Codes are in place to protect the public and make society a safer place.
