Distinctions between the oceans, although they are all connected and related, were made in order to divide large areas of space into distinct areas for the purpose of navigation and geography. The oceans also have distinct characteristics, tides, and currents which differentiate them from each other. People needed to divide the oceans for these reasons, because if there was just one large ocean it would be even more various and complex for the human mind to concieve of. By seperating it into different sections we can understand it better.
