Swamps are created by high-minerral content soil that drains very slowly. This soil is often found in the south.
Swamps and marshes are in lower areas where they provide drainage. There are many swamps and marshes in the north, but they are not as vast in size as some of them found in the south. They tend to be small and what we think of as “backyard” pond. The swamps and marshes of Florida, Georgia, and other southern states are vast and provide much drainage for that areas of the country.
Some of the southern areas have also received more press because of recent disasters like Hurrican Katrinia and other hurricanes. You may not hear much about marshes and swamps in the north because such natural disasters do not occur there.
