There are two main reasons a Californian may have a fireplace in their home. The first is that the home owner simply may like the way the fireplace looks in the home. It is merely an aesthetic piece. Also, the home owner may want to use the fire place for heat. As hard as it may be for some of us to imagine that Californians need heat in the winter, it is a reality. People adjust to living in warmer, stable temperature climates. When the temperature drops from eighty in the summer to fifty in the winter, the change feels the same to a Californian as a drop from eighty in the summer in New England to zero in the winter. It is all what you are accustomed to.
