Probably because they get so much bad publicity from being abused by famous athletes. Steroids are a wonderful drug used to treat many illnesses, but they can also be used to bulk up the body artificially to a level unattainable by working out alone, at least in that short a period of time. For this reason they’re considered cheating, and it’s a very widely publicized event when a star athlete is found to have been using them.
As with most drugs, there are positive and negative uses. Unfortunately, when people misuse a drug, these negative aspects are more widely publicized. Steroids are found in dermatology creams and perscriptions for arthritis, asthma, and high cholesterol.
One very important reason that steroids are only condoned in the medical setting is that they carry with them serious health risks with overuse. Since most use by athletes is not mediated by a trained health professional, the potential for negative physical reactions is quite high. As a drug related to hormones, it has widespread systemic effects in the body. Risks of abuse of steroids include dysfunction of the heart, liver, and kidneys, as well as stunted skeletal growth in adolescents.
