A number of reasons. Some seeds may be valuable because they allow for the genetic engineering of plants with desirable characteristics. For example, competitive pumpkin growers are known to charge top dollar for seeds from desirable pumpkins. (The pumpkins are similar to stud racehorses). Other seeds may be valuable because the plants are valuable. A recent study by the University of Washington lists the “ten most profitable plants” for horticulturalists : zinnias, bluepoint dahlias, achillia millefolium, scabiosa, imperial larkspur, blue horizon argentum, sightseeing veronica, malva zebrina, salvia horminum, snapdragon, and verbena.
