Why are some lakes so much clearer than others?

How clear the lake is depends on the amount of nutrients and plant life in the water. If a lake has more nutrients that foster plant growth, mainly nitrogen or phosphorous, then the lake becomes less clear due to the algae and other large plants these nutrients foster.
