Some aquifers are not replenished because there is not enough rainfall to counter the groundwater that was removed from them. This may be because of changing weather patterns or climate conditions or because more water is withdrawn then is naturally added to the aquifer.
Another reason some aquifers can’t be replenished is because withdrawal of too much water can cause an empty space and lead to aquifer collapse. After a collapse, there is no longer anywhere for water to be stored.
