It probably has to do with money. Fossil fuels, generally speaking, are cheaper than renewable energy. Also since wind power relies on prime environmental conditions, they can be unreliable. There may be other minor reasons such as the noise they produce and the fact that they may be unsightly to some people, but when it comes down to it, money is usually the main issue when regarding energy.
The late Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy opposed Cape Wind because it would obstruct views from the Kennedy Compound on Martha’s Vineyard. Others politicians represent constituents that depend on fossil fuels for their livelihood. And yes, as meg says, money is the root of the problem for many politicians.
