Why are some metals magnetic while others aren’t?

Magnetism depends on the orientation of the electrons in a material. In iron, it is very easy to change the orientation of the electrons, especially when the metal is hot. This property has allowed us to observe the phenomenon of ocean floor spreading and how Earth’s magnetic poles have changed over time.
