Why are some trees hollow when you cut them down?

There are many reasons why a tree may be hollow or partially hollow. Partial holes are commonly found in older trees and are a product of the growing process when the tree splits apart. Other holes can be dug out by insects or animals as homes. Still other trees may become hollow because of infestation from fungi, insects or disease that feed on the tree’s fleshy core.
