This practice was explored in the documentary, The Cove (2009). Many dolphins are killed in Japan for food, although their meat is tainted with mercury and not safe to eat. The documentary shows how many Japanese people are not aware of this practice and are unknowingly eating dolphin meat. Dolphins are also hunted and captured to sell to zoos and aquariums around the world.
Local residents also argue that it is part of their traditional culture, a practice dating back to the 1600s.
